Legally you can only buy antiques dated after 1795, the government mandated cut-off. Authentic antiques will bear a wax seal that needs to be there—along with a receipt—when you declare the item on your way out of China. In general, good research is required for buying antiques in China. There are a lot of excellent fakes out there, so seek professional help if you are looking to invest in something really real. There won‘t be a lot of bargaining when dealing with antiques; the Chinese know the value of their cultural relics, so be prepared to pay full price for authentic treasures.
