Dear all,

I live part time in Shenzhen and I have a tourist visa. I was wondering if I can have a Chinese banking account on which I can write checks. Does anyone know if I am allowed to open such an account in China or am I limited to only certain banks for people with a tourist visa? Thanks.

Surely, it would be easy to open an individual banking account around China with your passport. While, if you want a writing check service, it should be complicated at least in Shenzhen. China Merchants Bank said the client should open it at any branch bank with first deposite 500,000yuan. You are expected to handle the writing service 5 times /month and keep the daily balance 100,000yuan or above.

There is no such a thing as personal checks in China. You can however open easily a personal account at any bank here, and most will provide you with an ATM card that you can use for withdrawals or payments.

Getting a Chinese bank account is very easy. Just need passport. Can be done in a few minutes.
